Where, when and by whom did the Lazy Susan originate? The explanation for the term Lazy Susan may have been lost to history and according to folklore, it as an American invention by Thomas Jefferson who had a daughter named Susan, except in reality he didn’t. In the second half of the 18thc, the name dumb waiter began to be applied to rotating servers, or trays. This particular “Lazy Susan” was made in the 1800’s and is English. The wood used is a premium grade of solid mahogany and has an old French polish finish. There is evidence of a prior repair, although it was well executed.
