French Trumeau mirror, which originated as a center pillar covered with a mirror supporting a large doorway. By the 18th century in France, they became an over-mantle decoration above a fireplace. Difficult to date exactly, but the backside (shown) does appear to be very old and at least from the mid-1800’s. The paint on our Louis XVI style mirror is exactly how we found the trumeau, in what we refer to as classic French putty grey, which is similar to the grey used in the Gustavian period.
