French Louis XVI style dining chairs in a very rare set of (12) matching side chairs. This suite of (12) Louis XVI dining chairs came from the city of Bordeaux in Southwest France. The Louis XVI chairs were described as; “chairs in molded and carved fruit wood, rests on four legs tapered fluted, green velvet trim. Louis XVI style”.
In looking at the chairs in detail, we are thinking that they might be walnut, and the nailheads are so old that many are turning green. The age of this set of (12) Louis XVI dining side chairs is probably late 1800’s to very early 1900’s. When you press on the seat cushion you can hear the horsehair and shredded coco fibers crunch. The finish can either be enhanced with just steel-wool and some natural beeswax or changed completely; however, the patina is so nice that we thought beeswax might be the logical move. Note the rounded front corners and the absence of any carving. Occasionally, we will stumble upon set of (8) or (10) Louis XVI dining chairs, but sets of (12) are as common as hen’s teeth.
