Directoire style was a period concurrent with the Directory (November 2, 1795–November 10, 1799). The style leans to Neoclassical architectural shapes, with minimal carving and is sandwiched between the reign of Louis XVI and the rule of the Empire. Directoire period furniture was primarily designed by the architects and interior designers of Charles Percier (1764–1838) and Pier François Léonard Fontaine (1762–1853). Our antique French Directoire buffet was constructed from walnut and if you look closely you will see old French repairs which were executed quite well. Our thinking is that this particular Directoire buffet is époque, which simply means that this antique French buffet was probably constructed during the actual Directoire period and not at a later date. The grain of the French walnut is truly exceptional and although we did refinish the buffet, we did not sand and remove any of the original patina. The finish you see is hand rubbed and not simply a spray on. There are no visible prior repairs to the marble top.
