Antique Chinese Martaban Stoneware Jar or Pot, Ming Dynasty
Antique ItemMartaban jars are basic stoneware storage containers or pots used during the Ming dynasty. Thai, Chinese, Burmese, and Cambodian goods were shipped throughout southeast Asia in these large jars that were produced near port towns. Typically they were covered in black, brown or amber glazes and displayed various decorations. Commonly they held provisions such as oil, wine and fruits. The expert where we purchased the pot's opinion was 17th c, personally, I don't see that, but clearly it is very old and very heavy. Please read the below comment about a chip around the top lip of the jar. China, 1650-1750.
Condition: Good. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Pretty incredible based on its age. Please note the lip has a 1.75" long chip; images 1 and 6.
