Heywood-Wakefield Sofa, End Table and Pair Chairs 1930’s
Vintage ItemHeywood-Wakefield Mid-Century Modern Sofa Set with End Tables and a Pair of Chairs in their Original Fabric circa 1930’s Currently, we have several pieces and suites of Bamboo, Wicker and Rattan furniture in our Chicago showroom, but all fail in comparison to the build quality of our Antique Heywood-Wakefield 5-piece suite that just arrived from Michigan. The Bamboo set includes a large Sofa with 2-matching Heywood-Wakefield Chairs and a pair of identical Side or end Tables. All one has to do is look under the seat cushion and you’ll immediately see how a proper seat cushion should be made, with real horsehair used for padding and hand-tied coil springs which explains why they are so comfortable and do not feel like old worn-out furniture after 90-years. Little history; Heywood-Wakefield Company began in 1826 when John Quincy Adams was our president and the industrial revolution was just about to take hold. The Heywood brothers, Walter, Levi and Benjamin began making chairs in a shed adjoining their family farmhouse in Gardner, Massachusetts. By the 1870s, the company had diversified to include rattan and reed furniture. This suite of early Heywood-Wakefield Bamboo was purchased by the family’s grandfather in the 1930’s and unbelievably still has its beautiful original fabric covering. We found this Bamboo set of Furniture in the family’s basement where it had been carefully stored for decades. In 1897, Heywood Brothers and the Wakefield Company merged to create Heywood Brothers & Wakefield Company; later shortened to Heywood-Wakefield by 1921 and stayed in business until 1971. In 1992, the South Beach Furniture Company (Andrew Capitman) and furniture executive Leonard Riforgiato acquired the Heywood-Wakefield name. In 2022 South Beach Furniture officially became Heywood Wakefield Co. and relocated to Winchendon, MA. where it remains to this day building high quality furniture. United States, 1930-1939.
Condition: Good. Wear consistent with age and use. The set was thoroughly cleaned and varnished, but did not require restoration. Please note a seat cushion on the sofa is a little tattered, image 7.
