Antique French Industrial Steel Shelf Unit (étagère since it is French) probably made for a Michelin Tire dealer between 1900 and 1920. We deliberately chose to leave the étagère in its all-original finish, for the Michelin lettering and Michelin Man are still both visible. In 1889, the Michelin brothers, both born in the 1850’s were running a farm implement business in France. The story goes that a cyclist tyre needed repair and turned up at their place of business. The tyre was glued to the rim which was typical of the era and it took over three hours to repair. dry. Édouard Michelin was intrigued with the pneumatic tyre, so the brothers both worked on creating their own pneumatic tyre that was not glued to a wheel. Michelin soon incorporated in May of 1889. By 1891 the Michelin brothers had their first patent for a removable pneumatic tyre. Not that any of this information is relevant to our incredible Antique Steel French étagère, but a story that goes along with an item is always nice. We imagined this to either be in a Country Inspired Kitchen or possibly a man’s den, especially if he enjoys Automobiles, as we do. In collecting Automobilia for decades, more than I care to admit, I have never seen another Michelin Steel étagère.
