Huge Heavy Silver-Plated Tray from Le Français Restaurant
Vintage ItemHuge and Heavy Silver Plated Serving Tray from the Incredible Le Français Restaurant in Wheeling, Illinois. I feel compelled to quote the CBS Sunday Morning Show when chef Jean Banchet described himself as “just another French Chef” and the interviewer Charles Kuralt responded by saying, “just like Rembrandt was just another painter”. Having enjoyed many meals at the Restaurant, Charles Kuralt was spot on with his comment. Back to the huge Silver-Plated Tray which is stamped on the back confirms it was manufactured by Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik (WMF) in Germany noted for their high-end, professional "Hotel" catering line. The Restaurant was founded by legendary chef Jean Banchet in 1973, Le Français was widely considered the finest French restaurant in America during the 1980s and 1990s, earning unmatched national acclaim. I believe the New York Times had it rated number 1 in America. Banchet used the Silver Trays at the beginning of the dinner to display all the different French pâtés for the evening.
